Changing Door Swing On Frigidaire Refrigerator

Updated: Apr 16

The ability to customize our living spaces to suit our needs and preferences is one of the greater joys of homeownership. This extends to our kitchen appliances alongside everything else in the home. One particular flexibility we often overlook is the option to alter which way the door swings on our refrigerator. This can save valuable space and make it easier to reach our favorite snacks. This write-up is particularly suited to owners of Frigidaire refrigerators, as we will closely examine how to switch the door swing on these models. The door reversal process on a Frigidaire refrigerator is surprisingly manageable and does not require specialist knowledge or advanced DIY skills. All it takes is the right tools, a solid understanding of the sequence of tasks, and a bit of patience. To begin with, be sure you have the right tools for the task to avoid any avoidable hassle. For this job, you will need: a #2 Phillips screwdriver, a 3/8" socket or nut driver, a 5/16" socket or nut driver, a 1/4" socket or nut driver, and a small flat-blade screwdriver. Once you have assembled all your tools, it is time to start the procedure. The first step is to remove all the food and other items from the fridge to prevent them from falling out while you're working. After the refrigerator is empty, unplug it to guarantee safety while fidgeting with the components. The main stages of a door swing change involve taking off the top hinge cover, unscrewing the top hinge, moving the door to a safe location, and relocating the middle hinge. After these are completed, you can move the door from one side to the other and switch the doorstop to the opposite side. To begin the relocation process, take off the hinge cover on top of the refrigerator by gently prying it loose with your small flat-blared screwdriver. Underneath, you should find two or three bolts fastening the top hinge. Unscrew these with your 5/16" socket or nut driver, but keep a firm hand on the door to prevent it from falling when the screws are taken out. With the top hinge unfastened, take the door off and place it carefully in a safe place to prevent it from getting damaged. The next step involves detaching the middle hinge, done by unscrewing the bolts found underneath the top part of the fridge door yet above the freezer door, using a 3/8" socket or nut driver. This will allow you to remove the upper door and move the swing direction. However, remember to keep a firm grip on the doors when unscrewing this hinge to prevent them from falling. Once you have removed the doors, you can proceed to remove the doorstop at the bottom of the fridge. The doorstop can be detached by unscrewing two bolts using a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Once removed, place it on the opposite side where you want your door to open. Generally, the lower hinge pin will need to be relocated to meet the doorstop's new position. It can be moved by unscrewing first and then reattaching it on the opposite side. With the hinges and doorstop moved to your satisfaction, you can reattach the fridge doors in the opposite direction. Attach the doors by reversing the process, starting with the middle hinge and the top door, followed by the top hinge and the upper door. Finally, check that everything is working as it should. The doors should swing open smoothly, and the refrigerator should function just the way it did before the alteration. If the doors aren’t aligned perfectly or do not seal tightly, you can adjust the level by turning the adjustment screw on the bottom hinge. In conclusion, changing the door swing on your Frigidaire refrigerator is a relatively simple task you can manage without professional help. By taking the process step by step and not rushing through it, you can quickly and efficiently adapt your refrigerator to suit your desired style and better align with the layout of your kitchen. While this process can sometimes be a bit daunting, a dedicated homeowner can surely accomplish it with ease.
